Prompting is powerful, but it has limits. Knowing when to reach for other tools — fine-tuning, RAG, tool use, or agent architectures — is as important as knowing how to prompt well.

The escalation ladder: Always start with prompting. It's the fastest, cheapest, most flexible approach. If prompting alone can't achieve the quality you need, add few-shot examples. If few-shot isn't enough, try RAG to ground responses in real data. If you need consistent behavior at scale, consider fine-tuning. If you need real-world interaction, add tool use. If you need autonomous multi-step workflows, build an agent.

Each step up the ladder adds complexity, cost, and maintenance burden. Don't build an agent when a good prompt will do. But equally, don't spend weeks prompt-engineering around a problem that fine-tuning would solve in an afternoon.

The future is hybrid: The most powerful AI systems combine all of these. A well-prompted agent with RAG access and tool use, backed by a fine-tuned model — that's the state of the art. But it all starts with good prompting fundamentals.
